Samsung's Lawyers Demand to See iPhone 5 and iPad 3

Thisismynext points out that Samsung has filed a motion Friday night asking Apple to turn over the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 as part of the discovery process in the ongoing Samsung/Apple legal feud.
Samsung claims that it needs to see Apple's future products because devices like the Droid Charge and Galaxy Tab 10.1 will presumably be in the market at the same time as the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, and Samsung's lawyers want to evaluate any possible similarities so they can prepare for further potential legal action from Apple.
The demand comes after Apple's lawyers were granted access to Samsung's upcoming (and already publicly demoed) devices.

To be clear, access on each side is restricted to the lawyers involved and not any of the engineers from either company. Thisismynext believes this is just a calculated gamble for additional leverage, and that the whole motion sounds strange and based on many assumptions.
That means talks have been at a standstill for a long time now, and I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung was trying to put some additional heat on Apple to try and kick negotiations back into gear.
Apple filed suit against Samsung over its Galaxy line of hardware and similarities to the iPhone and iPad lines.

A complete iPhone solution for reverse caller lookup

Number Guru gets you information when caller ID doesn't. This free iPhone app allows you to input any phone number and figure out who is calling you. It's particularly nice when you get spam telemarketer calls, because the app has some crowdsourcing features that can provide more information than just a company name.

The app covers 100 percent of listed US landlines and about half of US cellular numbers. The app will also identify the carrier the call came through, although it can get confused over ported numbers. I saw that myself, because I'm on AT&T after originally being on Verizon, and Number Guru misidentified my carrier. Verizon doesn't supply any caller information, so a Verizon call won't be identified.

Number Guru asks (but does not require) you to upload your contacts. According to the developer that information is not shared with anyone else, but will be part of some future enhancements to the software. (I opted out.) The app also has one of the longest and foggiest terms of service agreements I have ever seen. It's a long scroll on your iPhone, and you can't use the app without agreeing. I couldn't see anything evil in the TOS, but it's available online if you want to read it yourself. The developer says it's going to work on shortening the TOS and making the terms clearer.

Number Guru does what it advertises. There are similar services on the web already, but some of them cost money. This app has a comprehensive database, and in my tests it worked well. If you're constantly wondering who is calling you, this is a handy app.

Fix an iPhoto '11 slowdown

As I've been adding photos to iPhoto '11 (9.1.3), it's been getting slower and slower. On Friday, it ground just about to a complete halt, such that even force quitting took about 20 minutes to accomplish.

According to Activity Monitor, there was no CPU activity and no network activity to speak of, which stumped me because I was assuming it was Faces or Spotlight laboring mightily away in the background.

After many trials and errors, I determined that the problem was due to my entries in the Accounts preference. I had MobileMe (times two), Facebook, Flickr, and six other e-mail accounts registered there. About a minute after each launch, iPhoto had been attempting unsuccessfully to connect with at least one of the accounts, which brought iPhoto, Finder, and any other open programs to a screeching halt.

As luck would have it, I was one of the lucky ones hit with MobileMe's latest outage, but after I deleted all the Accounts preference entries, iPhoto spran ...

Google Announces Major Push Into NFC Payments With Google Wallet

Google today unveiled its new Google Wallet initiative, a push into near field communications (NFC) that will allows users to make electronic payments with NFC-compatible hardware through the Google Wallet mobile app for Android.
Today in our New York City office, along with Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint, we gave a demo of Google Wallet, an app that will make your phone your wallet. You'll be able to tap, pay and save using your phone and near field communication (NFC). We're field testing Google Wallet now and plan to release it soon.
Google Wallet will be able to store users' credit card, loyalty card, and gift card information electronically, making it easy to access the payment and discount methods at compatible points-of-sale. The app will also coordinate with Google Offers, a new program allowing merchants to offer discounts redeemable through NFC or barcode scanning.

Initial support for Google Wallet NFC payments comes from MasterCard, which will accept payment at hundreds of thousands of existing PayPass terminals. Google is also rolling out its own virtual "Google Prepaid Card", which can be funded by any major credit card. Google Prepaid Card comes with an initial $10 sign-up bonus, and there will be no fees on transactions to top up the card until at least the end of 2011.

Hardware support for Google Wallet will appear on the Nexus S 4G phone running on Sprint's network, but other compatible handsets will be added over time.

Rumors have gone back and forth over whether Apple will be adding NFC capabilities to the next-generation iPhone, with the general feeling currently being that Apple will add NFC to future iPhone models, but not necessarily for the next generation expected to be introduced later this year.

Rumor: Apple testing MacBook Air with A5 processor

Japanese blog Mac Otakara claims sources have told them Apple is testing a MacBook Air with an A5 processor, the same CPU powering the iPad 2. While the machine performed "better than expected" according to their source, Mac Otakara says it's unclear whether this test machine was running Mac OS X or iOS. At any rate, the site claims this A5 variant MacBook Air has been created "just for experiment." Mac Otakara has been a reliable source of rumors in the past, having been one of the first sites to accurately depict the updated form factor of the iPad 2.

If Apple has indeed built such a device, it's unlikely the company intends to put it on the market. While the A5 processor is powerful enough under iOS, in terms of raw performance it pales in comparison to even the least powerful Intel chips. For example, the iPad 2's Geekbench score is around 720, while the lowest-rated MacBook Air processor scored over 2000. Benchmarks don't tell the whole story, of course, but they're a fairly reliable predictor of the general performance you can expect to get from a machine.

If Apple's experimenting with ARM processors in its laptop line, it's very unlikely that it's a simple matter of trying to run Mac OS X on the A5 and more likely that Apple is looking for ways to run iOS in a notebook form factor. This could be something as simple as a device that looks like a MacBook Air but has a touchscreen and runs iOS -- basically an iPad with an attached keyboard. Or Apple could have more ambitious plans in mind, with an A5 processor running as a sort of sidecar to a standard Intel CPU, with Mac OS X and iOS both capable of running on the same machine on their respective CPUs. Under such a scheme, iOS might run as a sort of "layer" atop Mac OS X -- rather like Dashboard does now, but more like Dashboard after a serious dose of growth serum.

From what we've seen of Mac OS X Lion thus far, it already looks as though Apple's looking at ways of merging OS X and iOS as far as the software's concerned. If Mac Otakara's sources are correct, it seems it's just a matter of time before the hardware follows.

Toggle Airport On and Off

The hint 'Control Airport Without Menu Bar' in the June issue of Macworld (also see this article) was very informative and useful. I devised a simple script based on the article hint that toggles airport on and off.

Here is the script. Copy and Paste it into AppleScript Editor and save it as an Application.

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. It follows precisely the method described in the linked Macworld article, in c ...

What Google and Mastercard's new mobile payment system could mean for iOS users

Last week saw a major new product announcement from Google: the new "Google Wallet" will allow people with compatible mobile phones to use them to pay for goods and services in shops with a simple wave of their hand. This follows a number of in/out/in/out/shake it all about rumors that this "NFC" stuff might be included in the next iPhone. So what is NFC and why should you care? Sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and I'll explain.

iPad 2 Is the ?Holy Grail? of Computing

Computerworld reviewer Michael deAgonia writes, ?Despite the arrival of other tablets, the iPad 2 remains the best available.? He praises its ?beautifully sleek unibody design,? speed (?everything feels faster?), long battery life, and ?silky smooth? iOS 4.3. Having used iPad for a year, deAgonia calls it ?the Holy Grail of computing? and argues that it ?may really be the closest thing to a perfect computer.? He concludes: ?If you need or want a tablet, get an iPad 2.?

Adobe Bridge CS5: Keep folders on external volumes in favorites bar

One of my favorite parts of Adobe Bridge CS5 is the Favorites panel, which lets you pin favorite folders to a sidebar for easy access.
However, one of my few gripes with Bridge is that if you click a folder in your favorites and that folder can't be found, the folder is removed from your favorites.

That was a problem for me because I keep folders in my favorites that are on external drives, which I sometimes accidentally click when that drive is unplugged.

I found a workaround that lets me keep folders on external volumes in my favorites that aren't removed like that. Just find the folder you want to use on the external drive, right-click it in the Finder, and choose 'Make Alias.' Move the alias to an out-of-the-way place on an internal hard drive and give it a nice name. Navigate to that alias in Bridge, and drag it to your favorites bar.

When you click it, it takes you straight to the folder you want (just like adding the actual folder to your favorite ...
